How to Buy Japanese Watches for Overseas Resale

Japanese watch inventory ranges from affordable domestic models to rare vintage pieces. Resale buyers need a model-level buying list and a consistent condition standard, because polishing, replacement parts and incomplete references can change value dramatically.

Reference, movement, condition and originality matter more than a polished case.

Potential sourcing channels

Specialist dealers offer clearer guarantees and servicing, while auctions and marketplaces offer breadth and price variation. Recycle shops can produce finds but inconsistent data. For repeat buying, build relationships with licensed dealers and wholesalers that can invoice the legal seller and describe how they source inventory.

Verify the watch, not only the brand name

  • Exact reference, serial format and movement/caliber
  • Case size, dial variant and production period
  • Bracelet or strap reference, links and buckle
  • Originality of dial, hands, bezel, crown and case parts
  • Service history and replaced components
  • Box, papers, tags and accessories

Condition and function checklist

Area What to record
Timekeeping Rate measured over a stated period and position; not a vague “works”
Functions Date change, chronograph, alarm, power reserve or other complications
Case Scratches, dents, corrosion and evidence of heavy polishing
Dial/hands Moisture, relume, refinishing, staining and alignment
Crystal/crown Chips, scratches, threading and setting function
Bracelet/strap Stretch, wear, links, clasp and material restrictions
Water resistance expires as an assumption. Do not advertise a used watch as water-resistant without a suitable current pressure test and clear scope. A functioning crown is not proof of sealing.

Authentication and stolen-goods risk

Use specialist expertise for higher-value pieces, retain seller identity and invoices, and compare serial/reference details. Photographs can identify inconsistencies but may not settle authenticity. Also check applicable stolen-property databases and marketplace requirements where appropriate.

Pack for value and discretion

Immobilize the watch in a protective case, prevent bracelet contact with the case, and use moisture and impact protection. Original presentation boxes may be heavy and increase freight, but they can add resale value. Decide with the listing economics rather than discarding them automatically.

Buying ceiling: conservative selling price − selling/payment fees − testing/service reserve − sourcing/inspection − shipping/insurance − import cost − target profit. Use the lower of comparable sold prices, not the highest active listing.

Start narrow

Choose a few references with liquid demand and available parts. Track purchase source, test result, service cost, days to sell and returns. Those records become a better buying guide than broad assumptions about “Japanese watches.”
