Japan Proxy Buying Fees Explained: Complete Cost Breakdown
A low proxy fee does not always produce the lowest delivered cost. To compare services fairly, trace the order from the Japanese seller to your door and identify every fee that can appear along the way.

The eight parts of a typical total
- Item price: the seller’s price or winning auction bid.
- Japanese domestic shipping: seller to warehouse; sometimes included, sometimes charged later.
- Buying or proxy fee: per item, per order, percentage-based or a combination.
- Payment and currency cost: card, transfer or exchange-rate spread.
- Optional services: photos, detailed inspection, functional testing, negotiation or special handling.
- Consolidation and packing: combining orders, removing unnecessary boxes or adding protection.
- International shipping and insurance: normally based on actual or dimensional weight.
- Import charges: duty, VAT/GST, brokerage or carrier disbursement fees in the destination country.
A cost sheet you can use
| Line | Known before purchase? | How to estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Item price | Yes | Listing price or maximum bid |
| Domestic shipping | Usually | Listing terms or seller quote |
| Service/payment fees | Yes | Fee schedule plus exchange method |
| Inspection/packing | If specified | Written service quote |
| International freight | Estimate | Packed weight, dimensions, method and zone |
| Import charges | Estimate | Product classification, declared value and country rules |
Why quoted international shipping can change
Before the parcel arrives, nobody knows the final packed dimensions with certainty. Express carriers commonly charge the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. A light but bulky collectible can therefore cost more than a compact metal part. Destination surcharges, remote-area fees and fuel adjustments also change.
Questions to ask before paying
- Is the service fee charged per item, seller, order or parcel?
- Which exchange rate is used and when is it fixed?
- How many storage days are free?
- Are consolidation and repacking separate fees?
- What does the basic inspection actually include?
- Can I choose the carrier after the parcel is measured?
- How are insurance and declared value handled?
- What happens if the seller sends the wrong item?

Compare like with like
A service advertising zero purchase fees may earn through the exchange rate or other handling charges. Another service may charge more upfront but provide better photographs or packing. Build the same hypothetical order for each provider, include every likely line, and compare scope as well as price.
